Teen fights aunts on right to inheritance in New York

When you're growing older, it's a good idea to make sure you update your will. You may think you have time to put it off, but you never should wait. If you wait, you may pass away or be caught off guard by an illness that makes it impossible for you to finalize your will.

This report may be shocking to some but draws attention to why it's important to complete your will as soon as possible. The teenage son of a firefighter killed on 9/11 is involved in a legal fight with his aunts over an inheritance of $1.2 million. The teen has four aunts, all of whom are fighting him over what they believe is their inheritance, while he fights for his portion.

According to the story, the 16-year-old boy and his mother believe he is entitled to part of the $1.2 million inheritance, because his grandfather intended to give it to him. He claims that the entire estate is worth $6 million with various rental properties and cash included. He alleged that his grandfather, when he was still living, had split the properties and cash among his four daughters while intending to give two properties to his grandson. He died while finalizing the inheritance plans.

The boy's lawsuit states that his aunts have refused to give him any property and plan to distribute it among themselves and their family members. It's not clear yet who will come out with the properties in the end.

A will contest like this one is something your family can avoid if a will is finalized correctly. If it is not and you need to contest a will, it's a good idea to speak with your attorney about the next steps to take.
